Layering: 4 things to keep in mind

all looks from Madewell

When I saw Madewell's fall lookbook I fell hard for their ideas on layering. Not only is layering a great way to keep warm, but also a way to add variety to an outfit. To keep it simple, there are 4 things I like to keep in mind when layering:

1. Patterns. Mixing patterns is one of my favorite ways to layer, and creates the most unique and one of kind looks. The key is to mix subtle and bolder patterns and look for common colors to tie the look together.

2. Colors. Colorblocking is still pretty popular and I love the idea of mixing unexpected colors together like coral and burgundy and then adding in some army green. The possibilities are endless when it comes to color.

3. Textures. If you want to create variety mix different textures especially if you are using neutrals or colors in the same family. The idea of a leather jacket, cozy sweater, silk pants, and shiny shoes makes the look much more interesting and fun.

4. Proportion. Keep in mind proportion and where things fall on your body. When you wear different layers you want them to hit your body at certain points that are flattering and appropriate for your frame.

What are your tips for layering?

I did a TV segment on layering last year, you can see it here if you'd like.
