I have to admit I've never really been a fan of the color Mauve (kind of a little blah for a girl who favors brights), but I've been seeing it around a lot and it's kind of starting to grow on me. When paired with the right pieces it can look amazingly pretty (and work as a great neutral). It's also a great color to wear now and then transition into Spring. Alt Summit 2012 Recap

Like I mentioned before I had a wonderful experience at Altitude Design Summit in Salt Lake City last weekend. It far exceeded my expectations and I'm already figuring out how I can attend next year. It was extremely inspiring and so much fun.

2. Received a box full of goodies, thanks to wonderful sponsors.

3. Dessert with every meal means I ate way more than I needed to last week.

8. The creativity in the 8 mini parties Friday night was mind-blowing.

9. and 10. Being a finalist in the HP fashion challenge meant I was so close to winning a computer, but so excited to have the opportunity to meet Anya (winner of Project Runway). She was incredibly cool.

11. Learning how to upholster a chair and tuft an ottoman had me thinking, "I can do that."

I'm headed to the Alt Design Conference tomorrow (Yay!). One of the nights at Alt a Winter White party is planned and the dress code is of course all white. I thought I would share some tips on how to pull off a winter white look.

1. wear a bit of sparkle (and a beautiful white coat doesn't hurt either)

2. add a dramatic ruffle to a well fitted dress

3. find materials best suited for winter such as sweater knits, wools, or even lace

4. mix in grays, browns, and blacks (neutrals always go well with other neutrals)

5. a bold red or pink lip pairs well with winter white

6. don't be obsessed with only bright white. Cream, ivory, and vanilla colors look great in the winter and are often times more flattering than bright white and mix whites together

Studio 5 Segment: How to Layer

Here are my Studio 5 Segments from today on layering: Part One and Part Two. I have to give a huge thanks to my fabulous models. I also included all of the sources for the items below, I know some of you have been asking (although some of the items are no longer available online because I got them on sale). I've also had some requests on what I wore, you can see that info below as well.

How to Layer Like a Pro

Layering is not only a way of adding warmth during these colder months, but also a way to add style to a look by adding in more color and texture. To create fresh and new looks, locate overlooked or underused articles of clothing and use those pieces to help build new outfits.

Mix Textures and Patterns
Don’t be afraid to mix and match different textures and patterns to create a fresh and newly layered look. For example, a lightweight dress paired with a chunky sweater and tights instantly takes a dress from summer to winter. The key to combining pieces such as these is to find a common element such as color that will tie all the pieces together.

Create a Balance
If you choose to wear several layers on top, think about keeping the bottom more simple and streamlined with a skinny or straight leg pant and vice versa. Too many layers overall can be too much and look messy. Also, consider proportion and where the layers fall on your body. If you are taller you can get away with longer lengths, if you are shorter consider selecting items that are shorter and more proportionate to your body size.

Select Well Fitting Pieces with a Nice Silhouette
One of the most common problems seen with layering is losing one’s shape and getting lost in the layers. To avoid this problem, try to select pieces with a nice silhouette. If you want to minimize a certain area of the body adding lots of layers to that area is not your best choice because it will only accentuate that area. Instead, try wearing a fitted, not tight, piece of clothing in those areas. Don’t forget to look in the mirror, front and back.

Use Accessories to Layer
Think beyond the clothes and try adding layers with accessories. By using accessories, you will minimize some of the bulk that comes from layering clothing and will achieve a more streamlined, clean and sophisticated look. Use dark colors to your advantage to minimize and consider adding layers to that base. Remember to layer light to chunky, and always consider your focal point, whether it be a chunky necklace, scarf, belt or boots.

My holiday gift guide starts tomorrow where I will be posting one idea every day up until Christmas. I started the gift guide last year as a way to motivate me to blog more and since then I've added in much more and haven't stopped blogging. I am a huge fan of the infinity scarves. For one, they instantly make a basic outfit such as jeans and a t-shirt (or seen in this look: a button up and skinny jeans) look more chic. Two, they add warmth during these winter months, and three, you don't have to figure out a way to tie it, just wrap it around and go.

So you bought a maxi dress or skirt this summer and you don't know what to do with it now? Don't put it away. By adding some layers and changing your shoes or accessories, you can still wear it well into the fall and winter.

What to add:

*Think structured or fitted on top. You don't want to wear something on top that is too baggy (unless it's cropped).
*Break it up with a belt. Wearing a belt will help to define your waist giving you that hourglass look.

*While bright colors are still a huge trend for fall, think of adding in some fall colors and/or textures, such as a wool blazer or fur vest.

What used to be a fashion faux pas is now considered fashion chic!

Fashion Blogger Ali Henrie is here to prove black and brown do belong together.

Wearing brown and black together is a great way to mix up your wardrobe in the fall and winter. Here are a few tips to make them work together while still keeping the outfit stylish and on trend.

Look as though you are wearing black and brown together on purpose
When you wear black and brown together you want to look like you meant to wear them together. Wearing a brown belt with black shoes might look like you didn't have brown shoes. So try to have more than one item of each color, otherwise that one item in brown or black may look out of place. By adding a couple of different items in each color will help to balance the outfit and make it look like it was meant to be.

Use different textures
Textures are a way to add life to neutrals including brown and black. To make these colors more visually interesting, try using different textures and materials such as a wool pant, a silky blouse, a patent leather belt, and animal pattern shoes. The look will not only be more interesting to look at, but also look more expensive.

Keep the browns similar in shade as well as the blacks
Different shades of brown and black create different looks. If you want more contrast use lighter shades of brown with black such as camel or nude. If you want a subtle look try wearing a darker shade of brown with black such as chocolate. Although keep in mind black and dark brown together can be plain, so think about adding in creams, gold and other light neutrals to warm up the outfit. The browns and blacks don't need to match exactly, but keep the browns similar in shade as well as the blacks. You want the browns and blacks to complement each other; this will help to create a more unified outfit.

If you want just a little pop of color think about adding color with a handbag, a belt, some shoes, or other accessories. Goodbye Arkansas

We said our goodbyes in Arkansas and the boxes are packed. While the husband goes to London (yep, during the move), the boy and I will be on the go for the next week before heading to our new home in Minneapolis. These past couple of days have been pretty busy and this boy has been a trooper.

I have always loved the mix of leather with lace, and with the popularity of leather skirts, I've fallen in love all over again.

While it might not seem like leather and lace go together, mixing the two can give you a chic look that is feminine and cool at the same time. The leather makes the lace not-so-dainty while the lace makes the leather not-so-tough.

the tips:

Instead of the typical leather jacket, try a leather skirt or leather leggings (if you dare) with a lace top.

Add leather accessories instead of a leather top or pants. Even just a leather belt or clutch can look equally as cool with a lace top.

Remember that styling project I worked on a couple months back, well here are the final family pictures. I love the location they chose and Julie's family is adorable and so photogenic.

I gave her 6 different looks using a purple, darker yellow, and gray color scheme. I love how she used the looks as inspiration to come up with her own look. And the best part about it: she didn't even have to buy a thing, everything she already had in her closet. Remember, sometimes it's just about re-mixing your wardrobe to come up with new options.

I've been seeing wrapped belts all over the place, in fact they have been something I have been wearing quite regularly myself. I like how they make an outfit seem more casual and not-so-perfect.

Also, wrapping the belt is a great way to wear those belts that may be on the big side.

Moving

I have some big news to share...we are moving to Minneapolis (of course right in time for winter, funny because we moved to Phoenix in the summer). If you don't already know, we move quite a bit (for my husband's job) and this will be our 6th state in 6 years. Moves are always bittersweet for me. I'm always sad to leave wonderful friends, but at the same time excited for a new adventure.

Lucky for me we get help with the move but there is still a lot of work to be done, so next month might be a bit crazy.

Also, if any of you have great tips on places I must see and do while in Minneapolis, do share.
